Jeju is a volcanic island off the south coast of South Korea, with Hallasan, the highest peak in the country at 1,947 metres, rising from its centre. The island's volcanic landscapes, including the crater of Seongsan Ilchulbong and the lava tubes of Geomunoreum, are a World Heritage site. Jeju City, on the north coast, is the main town, with Seogwipo on the southern side. Stone walls of black basalt crisscross the fields, and stone statues called dol hareubang stand as guardians.
Seongsan Ilchulbong, a tuff cone on the eastern tip, is climbed at sunrise, and Manjanggul is a lava tube with a long cavern. Cheonjiyeon and Jeongbang are waterfalls in the south, and Jusangjeolli is a coast of hexagonal basalt columns. The haenyeo, women divers who harvest seafood without breathing equipment, are a tradition recognised by UNESCO. Hiking trails, the Olle routes, circle the coast, and Udo is a small island off the east.
Black pork, hallabong tangerines and abalone porridge are the island's tastes, with fresh hairtail fish, sea urchin and seaweed from the divers. Tangerine groves turn gold in late autumn, canola flowers carpet the fields yellow in spring, and camellias bloom in winter. Summers are hot and humid, with a rainy spell in June and July.
