Busan lies at the south-east tip of the Korean peninsula, a port city squeezed between mountains and the sea. Haeundae Beach and Gwangalli Beach, backed by high-rise towers, are its best-known stretches of sand. Gamcheon Culture Village, a hillside of colourful stepped houses, was settled by refugees during the Korean War, and the UN Memorial Cemetery in Korea honours soldiers who died in that conflict.
Haedong Yonggungsa, a Buddhist temple on a sea cliff, is one of the few temples built by the water, and Beomeosa temple sits in the hills of Geumjeongsan. The Jagalchi Market is the largest seafood market in Korea, and the Busan International Film Festival is held every October. Taejongdae Park has coastal cliffs and a lighthouse, and Gyeongju, the ancient Silla capital, lies about an hour to the north.
Dwaeji gukbap, a pork and rice soup, milmyeon, wheat noodles in cold broth, eomuk fish cakes and hotteok pancakes with seeds are Busan's own foods, with raw fish and grilled shellfish served by the beach. Cherry blossom comes in late March and the summer rains in July.
