Temecula lies in Riverside County, inland from the Pacific, in a valley of gentle hills and vineyards. Old Town Temecula, along Front Street, keeps wooden storefronts, boardwalks and antique shops from its days as a stop on the Butterfield stagecoach route and a ranching centre. The town has grown around that core into a busy suburb.

Dozens of wineries lie in the valley to the east and south, many with tasting rooms and views over vineyards of Syrah, Chardonnay and Rhône varieties. Cool air that flows through a gap in the coastal hills in the evening keeps the grapes from overheating, and hot air balloons drift over the vines at sunrise. The Santa Rosa Plateau Ecological Reserve protects oak woodland and spring pools nearby, and San Diego and Palm Springs are both within a drive.

Winery restaurants serve Californian dishes built on regional produce, and picnic lunches are eaten among the vines. Summers are hot and dry and winters mild with some rain, and the grape harvest in late summer is the busiest time on the hills.
