Taos Pueblo, a multi-storey adobe village of the Tiwa people, is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the oldest continuously inhabited communities in the United States. The town grew up near it, and in the early twentieth century painters drawn by the light and landscape founded the Taos Society of Artists.
The Rio Grande Gorge, a deep canyon cut by the river across the high plateau, is crossed by a steel bridge high above the water. The Sangre de Cristo mountains rise above the town, and the Taos Ski Valley lies to the north-east, up a winding road. At Ranchos de Taos, south of town, the adobe church of San Francisco de Asís was painted by Georgia O'Keeffe and photographed by Ansel Adams.
New Mexican food is built on chile, red and green, in stews, enchiladas and tamales, with posole, a hominy stew, and sopapillas, puffed fried bread served with honey. The town sits at about 2,100 metres, cold in winter with snow in the mountains. Summer is warm and dry, with a rainy spell in late summer.
