Tampa stands on Tampa Bay in Florida, where the Hillsborough River runs through the downtown and the port is among the busiest in the state. Ybor City, a historic district, grew from the 1880s around cigar factories founded by Cuban and Spanish immigrants; its brick buildings, iron balconies and cafés remain, and chickens wander the streets. The Riverwalk follows the waterfront downtown.

The Henry B. Plant Museum occupies an 1891 hotel with silver minarets, now part of the University of Tampa, and the Tampa Bay History Center covers the region's past. The Florida Aquarium sits by the harbour, Bayshore Boulevard is a long waterfront drive and walkway, and Hillsborough River State Park has cypress swamp and rapids. Clearwater and St Petersburg beaches lie across the bay. Each January, the Gasparilla pirate festival fills the water with ships.

The Tampa-style Cuban sandwich includes salami, and deviled crab, a spicy fried croquette, black bean soup and strong café con leche are local specialities. Stone crab and Gulf grouper are served in season.
