St Petersburg lies at the tip of the Pinellas peninsula in Florida, with Tampa Bay on one side and the Gulf of Mexico on the other. It earned the nickname the Sunshine City, and its downtown waterfront has parks, a long pier and a harbour full of yachts. The Salvador Dalí Museum holds one of the largest collections of the painter's work outside Europe, and the Museum of Fine Arts and the Chihuly Collection add to the arts district.

Central Avenue and the surrounding streets are covered in murals, and Sunken Gardens is a botanical garden from the 1930s. Fort De Soto Park has beaches and an old fort, St Pete Beach, Treasure Island and Pass-a-Grille run along the Gulf, and Clearwater Beach is further north. Tarpon Springs, a Greek sponge-diving town, lies about fifty kilometres up the coast, the Skyway Bridge crosses the bay's mouth, and Tampa is across the water.

Cuban sandwiches, grouper and Gulf shrimp are common, and Greek pastries come from Tarpon Springs. The city has a big craft-beer scene, with breweries in converted warehouses, and winter days are mild and bright.
