St Louis stands on the west bank of the Mississippi River, just below where the Missouri joins it, and was long known as the Gateway to the West. The Gateway Arch, a stainless-steel curve 192 metres high, designed by Eero Saarinen and finished in 1965, is the tallest arch in the world, and the Old Courthouse beside it was the setting of the Dred Scott case. The Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis is lined with millions of glass tiles forming vast mosaics.

Forest Park, larger than New York's Central Park, hosted the 1904 World's Fair and Olympic Games and holds the zoo, the art museum, the history museum, the science centre and an outdoor theatre. The Missouri Botanical Garden, founded in 1859, has a glass geodesic dome, the Climatron. Across the river in Illinois, Cahokia Mounds, a World Heritage site, preserves the earthworks of a large Native American city that flourished a thousand years ago.

Toasted ravioli, breaded and fried pasta parcels, and St Louis-style pizza, thin and crisp with a processed cheese called Provel, are local inventions, and gooey butter cake is the sweet to try. Ribs and frozen custard also feature. Spring and autumn are comfortable, and summers are hot and humid.
