Shizuoka is a city on Suruga Bay in tea country, with Mount Fuji on the horizon, a castle park and shrines tied to the shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu.

Shizuoka lies on the Pacific coast of central Japan, on Suruga Bay, with the Southern Alps and Mount Fuji on the horizon. Tokugawa Ieyasu, who unified Japan under his shogunate, retired to Sunpu, as the city was called, and its castle park with moats and stone walls stands in the centre. His first resting place, the Kunozan Toshogu shrine, sits on a hill reached by ropeway from the Nihondaira plateau, which has views over the bay and Fuji.

To the east, the pine grove of Miho no Matsubara, part of the Mount Fuji World Heritage listing, curves along the beach. Inland, the hills of the upper Abe river are covered in tea bushes, the Makinohara plateau to the south-west is among Japan's largest tea areas, and the Toro ruins preserve a Yayoi-period village. The Izu Peninsula is nearby, and the lower slopes of Mount Fuji are a day trip away.

Shizuoka is one of Japan's leading tea regions. Oden here is dark with beef stock and sprinkled with fish powder. Sakura ebi, tiny pink shrimp from the bay, are fried or dried, and wasabi from the cold streams of the Utogi district is grated fresh over sushi. Strawberries and Abekawa mochi, rice cakes dusted with soybean flour, are the sweets.
