Experience the best of Sedona

Sedona is an Arizona town surrounded by red sandstone buttes and canyons, a landscape of rock formations, hiking trails and creekside cottonwoods.

Sedona lies at the mouth of Oak Creek Canyon in northern Arizona, at about 1,300 metres, surrounded by red sandstone buttes and spires with names such as Cathedral Rock, Bell Rock and Courthouse Butte. The rock gets its colour from iron oxide, and it glows orange and crimson at sunset. Many believe certain spots hold spiritual energy, called vortexes, and the town has a New Age following.

Oak Creek runs through a cool canyon of cottonwoods and orchards to the north, with swimming spots such as Slide Rock State Park. The Chapel of the Holy Cross is built into a red rock butte, and Tlaquepaque is a village of Spanish-style arcades and galleries. Native American cliff dwellings can be visited at Palatki and Montezuma Castle, Jerome is an old copper-mining town on a steep hill, and Flagstaff and the Grand Canyon lie farther north.

Green chile stew, fry bread and prickly pear drinks mark the Southwestern menus, and restaurant patios face the red cliffs. Wines from the Verde Valley are served in the nearby town of Cottonwood. Snow occasionally dusts the red rocks in winter.
