San Antonio grew around Spanish missions founded in the early eighteenth century, and the Alamo, a mission chapel where Texan defenders fell to Mexican forces in 1836, is its best-known landmark. San Antonio Missions National Historical Park protects four more missions along the river, and together with the Alamo they form a World Heritage site. The River Walk, a sunken path of cafés and bridges, winds through downtown.
La Villita is a small historic arts village, Market Square is a Mexican-style market, and San Fernando Cathedral dates from 1738. The Tower of the Americas rises over downtown, the Japanese Tea Garden fills an old quarry, and the Pearl is a converted brewery of restaurants and shops. The Texas Hill Country starts just north, with German-founded Fredericksburg, wineries and swimming holes, and Austin is about 130 kilometres away.
Tex-Mex was shaped here: puffy tacos, breakfast tacos, enchiladas and chili con carne, which the chili queens once sold in the plazas. Texas barbecue and cold beer follow. Fiesta, a festival with parades and music, fills April, when bluebonnets bloom in the Hill Country.
