Salt Lake City lies in a high valley between the Great Salt Lake and the Wasatch Range. Mormon pioneers led by Brigham Young founded it in 1847. Temple Square, the heart of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, is its centre, with the granite temple and the domed Tabernacle, home of a famous organ and choir. The Utah State Capitol stands on a hill to the north.
The Great Salt Lake, the largest saltwater lake in the Western Hemisphere, lies west of the city, and Antelope Island State Park in the lake has a herd of bison. The ski resorts of the Wasatch Range sit in canyons close to town, and the city hosted the 2002 Winter Olympics. Park City is a short drive east, the Natural History Museum of Utah and Red Butte Garden are on the hillside, and the Bonneville Salt Flats lie to the west.
Utah scones, fried dough served with honey butter, and pastrami burgers are local habits, with a pink fry sauce for the chips. Craft breweries and coffee roasters fill the older warehouse districts. Winters bring deep, light powder snow, and autumn colours the canyons red and gold.
