Sacramento grew up during the California Gold Rush, at the meeting of the Sacramento and American Rivers. Old Sacramento keeps wooden boardwalks and brick buildings of the 1850s beside the river, and the California State Railroad Museum shows steam locomotives. The domed State Capitol stands in a park of trees from around the world, and Sutter's Fort, an adobe fort of the 1840s, recalls the settlement that preceded the Gold Rush.
The Tower Bridge, a golden lift bridge of the 1930s, crosses the river, and the Crocker Art Museum holds Californian painting and a European collection. The American River Parkway offers a long trail for cycling and walking towards Folsom. The Gold Country towns of the Sierra Nevada foothills, including Coloma, where gold was found in 1848, and the farms and vineyards of the Delta and Napa Valley are within easy reach.
Sacramento calls itself America's farm-to-fork capital, with rice, almonds, tomatoes and pears grown in the Central Valley around it, and farmers' markets and restaurants that use them. Summer is hot and dry, with the Delta breeze cooling the evenings, while winter brings fog, and spring and autumn are pleasant.
