Christ the Redeemer stands with open arms atop Corcovado, looking down on the city, and cable cars climb Sugarloaf Mountain for views across Guanabara Bay. Below, the beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema are the stage for daily life, with volleyball, kiosks and the wave-patterned promenade, while Leblon and Arpoador extend the strip.
The Tijuca Forest, one of the largest urban forests in the world, covers the mountains with trails and waterfalls. The Selarón Steps, covered in colourful tiles, link Lapa, where samba bars fill with dancers at night, to the hillside neighbourhood of Santa Teresa. The Maracanã stadium, the Museum of Tomorrow and the Botanical Garden show other sides of the city.
Carnival, before Lent, brings the samba schools parading through the Sambadrome, but music fills the city all year. Food runs from feijoada and grilled meats at churrascarias to açaí bowls and fresh coconut water on the beach. Summer, from December to March, is hot and humid, while the winter months are mild, drier and sunny.
