The city stands in the far west of Paraná state, where the Iguaçu River joins the Paraná and the borders of Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay meet. The Iguaçu Falls, a UNESCO World Heritage site, form a broad arc of around 275 separate cascades. From the Brazilian side a walkway gives wide views of the whole curve and ends on a platform close to the Devil's Throat, where the water drops with great noise and mist.

Beside the falls, the Parque das Aves shelters toucans, macaws and many other birds in walk-through aviaries of rainforest. The Itaipu Dam, shared with Paraguay, is among the largest hydroelectric plants in the world and can be visited. The Marco das Três Fronteiras at the confluence marks the meeting of the three countries, with Puerto Iguazú and Ciudad del Este on the opposite banks.

Churrasco, grilled meat carved at the table, is the standard meal, and river fish such as pintado appear on menus beside cassava and rice. Pão de queijo, small cheese breads, come with coffee. The climate is subtropical with rain in every month, the falls swell after heavy rain, and the forest around them stays green all year.
