Experience the best of Paraty
Paraty is a Portuguese colonial port on Brazil's Green Coast, with whitewashed houses, cobbled streets and a bay full of forested islands.

Paraty grew rich in the eighteenth century as the port where Minas Gerais gold was shipped towards Rio and Portugal, and its historic centre, a World Heritage Site, keeps the whitewashed houses, painted doors and rounded stone streets of that time. The streets slope so that the highest tides flood them, a design said to wash them clean. Small churches once served different communities, among them Santa Rita, Nossa Senhora do Rosário and Nossa Senhora das Dores.
Beyond the centre, the bay is dotted with islands, and schooners carry visitors to beaches that can only be reached by sea. The Saco do Mamanguá, a deep tropical inlet, is a calm place for kayaking, while inland the Atlantic rainforest of the Serra da Bocaina climbs behind the town, with waterfalls and the stone-paved old gold road that mule trains once followed down to the coast.
Paraty is famed for cachaça, the sugar-cane spirit, poured neat or in a caipirinha, with small distilleries in the hills around the town. The coast's cooking leans on fresh fish and shrimp, and azul-marinho, a stew of fish and green banana named for its dark colour, is a local dish. The drier months from May to September are cooler, and the summers are warm and humid.
