Experience the best of Salvador da Bahia
Salvador is the capital of Bahia on Brazil's north-east coast, a city of Afro-Brazilian culture, colourful colonial streets, churches and Atlantic beaches.

Salvador was founded by the Portuguese in 1549 and was Brazil's first capital, later a major port of the sugar and slave trades, and the Afro-Brazilian heritage that resulted shapes its music, religion and food. The old centre, Pelourinho, is a UNESCO-listed hill of pastel colonial houses, cobbled squares and baroque churches. The Church of São Francisco is covered inside in gilded woodwork, and the Lacerda Elevator lifts people between the upper and lower towns.
The Bonfim church is known for the coloured ribbons tied to its gates and railings, and the Farol da Barra lighthouse stands where Todos os Santos Bay meets the open Atlantic. Boats cross the bay to Itaparica Island, and the beaches of the northern coast and the village of Praia do Forte lie up the coast, along the Linha Verde road.
Bahian cooking uses palm oil, coconut milk and chilli. Acarajé, a fried bean fritter filled with shrimp and sauce, is sold by women in white dresses on street corners, and moqueca stews fish in coconut. Capoeira is practised in the squares and drumming fills the evenings. The city is warm all year, and Carnival, held before Lent, is its biggest event.
