Experience the best of Manaus
Manaus is the Amazon's great river port, a rubber-boom city with an opera house, where the dark Rio Negro meets the pale Solimões.

Manaus rose on the rubber trade of the late nineteenth century, and the wealth of that era shows in the Teatro Amazonas, an opera house topped with a dome tiled in the colours of the Brazilian flag. The municipal market beside the port, with ironwork shipped from Europe, sells fish, fruit, herbs and handicrafts, and old floating docks line the waterfront.
Just downstream, the Meeting of the Waters shows the black Rio Negro running beside the sandy brown Solimões for several kilometres before they mix into the Amazon. Boats lead into the surrounding rainforest, to riverside villages, creeks and lodges, and to pink river dolphins. Presidente Figueiredo, north of the city, has many waterfalls, and the Anavilhanas archipelago lies upriver.
Amazonian fish dominate the table: tambaqui, grilled as ribs, tucunaré and pirarucu, served with manioc flour. Tacacá, a hot soup with tucupi and jambu leaves that tingle on the tongue, is sold from street stalls, and açaí, cupuaçu and guaraná appear in drinks and sweets. It is warm all year, with the river at its highest around June and the drier months from about August.
