Experience the best of São Paulo
São Paulo is Brazil's largest city, a sprawling metropolis of art museums, street markets and immigrant neighbourhoods, famed for its food.

São Paulo spreads across a plateau about 750 metres above sea level, a sea of towers broken by patches of green. Avenida Paulista is the main boulevard, with the MASP art museum raised on two red concrete frames above a public square. Ibirapuera Park has curving buildings by Oscar Niemeyer, and the Pinacoteca in the old centre shows Brazilian art in a brick building beside the Jardim da Luz.
Liberdade is the heart of the city's large Japanese-Brazilian community, with lanterns, shops and a weekend fair. Bixiga keeps its Italian roots in cantinas and pizzerias, and Vila Madalena is known for murals, bars and the graffiti alley called Beco do Batman. The Municipal Market has a stained-glass hall and stalls piled with fruit. The Atlantic coast and the port of Santos lie beyond the Serra do Mar escarpment.
Mortadella sandwiches and pastel de bacalhau, a fried pastry of salt cod, are the market snacks, and feijoada, the black-bean and pork stew, is the Saturday lunch. The city holds every regional Brazilian cuisine as well as Lebanese, Japanese and Italian cooking. Drizzle once earned the city a nickname, the Land of Drizzle, and summer afternoons still bring heavy rain.
