Richmond is the capital of Virginia, set at the falls of the James River where the coastal plain meets the Piedmont. Thomas Jefferson designed the State Capitol, which was modelled on a Roman temple in France and completed in the 1780s. St John's Church on Church Hill is where Patrick Henry made his speech of 1775 demanding liberty or death. Richmond was the capital of the Confederacy during the American Civil War, and its museums and battlefields tell that history.
The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts holds five imperial Fabergé Easter eggs among its collections. Hollywood Cemetery, on a hill above the river, contains the graves of two US presidents, James Monroe and John Tyler. Belle Isle, an island in the rapids, is used for walking and climbing, and in the city's river park visitors can raft and kayak through the rapids of the James. Maymont, a Gilded Age estate, has Japanese and Italian gardens, and Colonial Williamsburg and Jamestown lie to the east.
Virginia ham, Brunswick stew, biscuits, peanuts and Chesapeake oysters are the old tastes of the region, and Richmond has a busy craft-beer and restaurant scene among its murals and cobbled alleys. Summers are hot and humid, spring brings blossom and azaleas, and autumn colours the river banks.
