Puerto Madryn faces the calm Golfo Nuevo on the Atlantic coast of Chubut province, a seaside town of broad beaches and a long waterfront promenade. Welsh settlers landed on this shore in 1865, and the valley towns of Gaiman and Trelew to the south still keep that heritage. The town itself is small and relaxed, with diving, sailing and sea views drawing most people outdoors.

The Valdés Peninsula, a UNESCO-listed reserve within day-trip reach, is the main draw, with southern right whales close to shore in winter and spring, plus elephant seals, sea lions, guanacos and orcas that sometimes hunt from the beaches. Closer to town, the Punta Loma reserve has a sea lion colony, while Punta Tombo, farther south, is among the largest Magellanic penguin colonies in the world.

Seafood leads the table: grilled hake, scallops and the langostino prawns landed by the local fleet, with Patagonian lamb on the grill and Welsh tea and cakes in the valley towns. The shallow gulf is calm enough for kayaking and for snorkelling alongside sea lions. Whales are present from about June to December, and the penguins return in September.
