Experience the best of Mendoza
Mendoza is a wine city of tree-lined avenues and irrigation channels on a dry plain, with the high Andes rising to the west.

Mendoza was largely rebuilt after the earthquake of 1861, which is why its streets are wide and its squares open. Plane trees shade the pavements, watered by old irrigation channels called acequias. Plaza Independencia sits at the centre with four smaller squares around it, and the great Parque General San Martín climbs to the Cerro de la Gloria, a monument with a view over the city.
West of the city the Andes close in. Aconcagua, the highest peak in the Americas, stands in a provincial park near the Chilean border, and the old road to Chile passes Puente del Inca, a natural stone bridge stained yellow and orange by mineral springs. Vineyards cover the plain in every direction, with Luján de Cuyo and Maipú close to town and the Uco Valley to the south-west.
The province makes most of Argentina's wine, and Malbec is the grape that carried its name abroad. Beef from the asado grill, baked empanadas and olive oil from local groves fill the tables, and a grape harvest festival is held each March. In April the vines turn red and gold, and the peaks above the city are white by winter.
