Experience the best of Puerto Iguazú

Puerto Iguazú is a small Argentine town where the Iguazú and Paraná rivers meet, close to the waterfalls of Iguazú National Park.

The town stands on a red-earth bluff above the meeting of two rivers, with Brazil on one bank and Paraguay on the other. A lookout called the Hito Tres Fronteras faces both countries across the water. Most people come for the falls, some twenty kilometres upriver inside the national park, where the Iguazú splits into roughly 275 separate drops and the largest, the Devil's Throat, pours into a U-shaped chasm.

The park is protected subtropical rainforest, home to coatis, toucans, butterflies and, far more rarely seen, jaguars. Walkways run along the tops and bottoms of the falls, and boats go to the foot of the cascades. The Brazilian bank, reached from Foz do Iguaçu across the river, gives a wider panorama of the falls. Closer to town, the Güirá Oga refuge looks after rescued birds and animals.

Misiones cooks with cassava and maize. Chipa, a chewy cheese bread, is sold warm on street corners, surubí, a big river catfish, is the local fish, and mate from the yerba plantations of the province is passed around everywhere. Rain falls in every month, so the falls carry water all year and the forest stays green.
