Experience the best of Ushuaia

Ushuaia, on the Beagle Channel in Tierra del Fuego, is often called the southernmost city in the world, a port ringed by snowy peaks.

Ushuaia sits on a narrow shelf between the Beagle Channel and the Martial mountains, in the Argentine half of Tierra del Fuego. It began as a mission and later became a penal colony, and the old prison, now a museum, tells that story alongside the maritime history of the far south. Painted houses climb the slope, and the harbour is where expedition ships leave for Antarctica.

West of town, Tierra del Fuego National Park covers beech forest, peat bogs, lakes and the shore of Lapataia Bay, where the national road ends. The End of the World Train follows part of the line that convicts once used to haul timber. Boats on the Beagle Channel pass colonies of sea lions and cormorants on rocky islets, and the small red-and-white Les Éclaireurs lighthouse.

Centolla, the local king crab, is the dish to look for, along with Patagonian lamb roasted over embers and mussels from the channel. In midsummer the sun sets late and the days stay cool, and in winter snow lies deep on the hills behind the town.
