Experience the best of Bariloche

Bariloche is an alpine-style resort on Lake Nahuel Huapi in Argentine Patagonia, with ski slopes, chocolate shops and forests below the Andes.

San Carlos de Bariloche stands on the southern shore of Lake Nahuel Huapi, in a glacial valley with the Andes rising behind it. The civic centre, built of stone and dark timber in the 1930s, gives the town its alpine look, and the Museo de la Patagonia is housed inside it. Nahuel Huapi National Park, the oldest in Argentina, surrounds the town with lakes, beech forest and rocky peaks.

The Circuito Chico, a loop road along the lakeshore, passes the forested peninsula of Llao Llao, and chairlifts and cable cars climb Cerro Campanario and Cerro Otto for views across the water. Cerro Catedral, the main ski area, lies about twenty kilometres from town. Boats cross the lake to Isla Victoria and the myrtle woods of the Arrayanes forest, and the Seven Lakes road heads north towards San Martín de los Andes.

Chocolate is the local trade: shops along Calle Mitre sell truffles, fudge and slabs to break into pieces. Smoked trout, venison and lamb are common on menus, and craft beer is brewed across the Lake District. Skiers arrive between June and September, walkers and kayakers once the snow has gone.
