Experience the best of Provo

Provo lies at about 1,370 metres in Utah Valley, between Utah Lake and the steep Wasatch Range, with Mount Timpanogos, at 3,581 metres, rising above the city. It was settled in 1849 by Mormon pioneers and is home to Brigham Young University, founded in 1875, whose hillside campus with its museums and library shapes the city's character. The Provo River Trail runs from the lake shore up into the canyon.

Provo Canyon climbs to the east with Bridal Veil Falls, a double-tiered waterfall visible from the road, and leads to Sundance and the Heber Valley. Utah Lake, a wide, shallow lake, is the largest freshwater lake in the state. Timpanogos Cave National Monument lies about 30 kilometres north in American Fork Canyon, and Salt Lake City is about an hour's drive north, with the ski resorts of the Wasatch beyond it.

Fry sauce, a pink dipping sauce, scones with honey butter and ice cream are Utah favourites, and orchards in the valley supply peaches and cherries. Dutch-oven cooking is a pioneer tradition. Snow arrives in the mountains in winter, summers are dry, and in autumn the maples in Provo Canyon turn red.
