Port Angeles sits on the Strait of Juan de Fuca beneath the Olympic Mountains, with a working harbour, a waterfront promenade and a compact downtown. Ediz Hook, a long sand spit, curves out to shelter the harbour, and a ferry crosses the strait to Victoria, on Vancouver Island, which can be seen across the water on clear days.
Hurricane Ridge, in Olympic National Park, rises south of town to alpine meadows with views over snowy peaks, and Lake Crescent, a deep glacial lake, and the Sol Duc hot springs lie farther west. Beyond them are the Hoh rainforest and wild Pacific beaches such as Rialto Beach, while Dungeness Spit, a long sand spit and wildlife refuge, lies east near the lavender farms of Sequim.
Dungeness crab, salmon, halibut and oysters are the local seafood, and the farms around Sequim provide lavender, berries and cheese. Port Angeles lies in the rain shadow of the mountains and is drier than the rainforest to the west, with mild summers and wet winters.
