Experience the best of Pisa
Pisa is a Tuscan city on the Arno, famous for its Leaning Tower and for the white marble cathedral, baptistery and cemetery that stand around it.

In the Piazza dei Miracoli, a broad lawn at the north end of the old town, four white marble buildings stand together: the cathedral, the baptistery, the cemetery known as the Camposanto and the Leaning Tower, which is the cathedral's bell tower. Building began in 1173, and the tower started to lean before it was finished because it stands on soft ground. Engineers stabilised it at the end of the 20th century.
The Piazza dei Cavalieri, the old centre of the Knights of St Stephen, is dominated by the Scuola Normale Superiore, and the University of Pisa, where Galileo studied and taught, dates from 1343. Along the Arno, the little Gothic church of Santa Maria della Spina sits by the water, and a mural by Keith Haring fills a wall near the station. The beaches of Marina di Pisa and Tirrenia lie west, and Florence is an hour away by train.
Cecina, a thin baked chickpea pancake, and baccalà, salt cod, are Pisan dishes, and wine and olive oil come from the hills inland. On 16 June, the Luminara di San Ranieri lights the riverside palazzi with thousands of small flames, and a costumed contest, the Gioco del Ponte, takes place on the Ponte di Mezzo on the last Saturday of June.
