Phoenix spreads across the Salt River Valley in the Sonoran Desert, ringed by mountains and dotted with saguaro cacti. Its name recalls the ancient Hohokam canals on which the settlers built. Camelback Mountain, a red sandstone peak shaped like a kneeling camel, rises in the east, and South Mountain Park is among the largest city parks in the United States. The Desert Botanical Garden shows cacti and desert flowers.

The Heard Museum presents Native American art and culture, the Musical Instrument Museum shows instruments from around the world, and Roosevelt Row is the downtown arts district. Taliesin West, Frank Lloyd Wright's winter home and school, lies in Scottsdale. Hiking trails in the Superstition Mountains, boating on the Salt River lakes, and Sedona's red rocks, about two hours north, all make a day out, and the Grand Canyon is a long drive farther.

Sonoran Mexican food defines the city: carne asada, green chile burritos, tamales and the Sonoran hot dog, a bacon-wrapped sausage in a soft roll. Prickly pear and citrus from valley groves flavour drinks and sweets. Summers are extremely hot, with daytime highs often above forty degrees Celsius, while winters are mild and sunny, and the desert blooms with wildflowers in spring.
