Pensacola lies on a wide bay in the western Panhandle of Florida, close to the Alabama border. Its nickname, the City of Five Flags, recalls the Spanish, French, British, Confederate and American flags that have flown over it. The historic district around Seville Square and Palafox Street keeps colonial-era houses, brick streets and museums, and the Pensacola Lighthouse, dating from 1859, rises over the naval air station.
The National Naval Aviation Museum, at the air station, displays dozens of historic aircraft, and the Blue Angels flight team is based there. Across the bay, Pensacola Beach, on Santa Rosa Island, has dunes and white quartz sand, and the brick Fort Pickens and Fort Barrancas guard the harbour mouth. Perdido Key lies west on the Alabama line, and Destin and the beaches of the Emerald Coast are to the east.
Gulf seafood is the local pride: red snapper, shrimp, oysters and fried grouper sandwiches, with grits and Southern dishes at the bayside restaurants. Summers are hot and humid, winters are mild, and the white beaches are busiest from May to September.
