Panama City Beach stretches for about forty kilometres along the Gulf of Mexico in the Florida Panhandle, a resort strip of condominiums and beach houses fronting white sand that squeaks underfoot. The sand is fine quartz washed down from the Appalachian Mountains, and the Gulf is clear and emerald green. Pier Park is the shopping and entertainment centre of the strip.
St Andrews State Park, at the eastern end, has dunes, a jetty and calm shallows for snorkelling, with boats to Shell Island, a barrier island with no buildings. Dolphin-watching boats and fishing charters leave the marinas, and wrecks and artificial reefs offshore make the area a scuba-diving centre. The 30A beach towns, including Seaside, lie to the west, and Destin is about an hour's drive along the coast.
Gulf seafood is the main fare: oysters, grouper, fried shrimp, fish sandwiches and boiled peanuts. Seafood restaurants line the marinas. The beach season runs from about April to October, the water stays warm into autumn, and winters are mild.
