Palm Springs lies in the Colorado Desert of southern California, at the foot of the steep San Jacinto Mountains, a resort that drew film stars and golfers from the 1930s. Mid-century modern houses and motels by architects such as Richard Neutra and Albert Frey give the town its look, and Palm Canyon Drive is lined with shops, galleries and cafés. The Palm Springs Art Museum shows modern and Western art.
The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway rises in rotating cars from the desert floor to Mount San Jacinto State Park, where pines and snow replace cactus. Indian Canyons, fan-palm oases on Agua Caliente Cahuilla land, have hiking trails and streams. Joshua Tree National Park lies about an hour's drive to the north-east, and the Living Desert zoo and gardens are in nearby Palm Desert.
Date shakes, made with fruit from the valley's date palms, are the Coachella Valley's famous treat, and Californian-Mexican cooking and steakhouses fill the evenings. Modernism Week in February celebrates the town's design. Winter and spring days are mild and sunny, and summer temperatures regularly climb above forty degrees.
