Newport Beach curves around Newport Harbor, a large sheltered bay dotted with sailboats and small islands, in Orange County south of Los Angeles. The Balboa Peninsula, a narrow strip with the ocean on one side and the harbour on the other, holds Newport Pier, the 1905 Balboa Pavilion, the Fun Zone with its Ferris wheel and the small car ferry to Balboa Island, a densely built island of cottages.
At the peninsula's end, the Wedge is famous for its heavy bodysurfing waves, and Corona del Mar has a sheltered cove below the cliffs south of the harbour entrance. Crystal Cove State Park, further south, has historic beach cottages and tide pools, and the Upper Newport Bay Ecological Reserve, a wetland of herons and egrets, can be explored by kayak. Whale-watching boats leave the harbour in winter.
A dory fishing fleet sells its catch from the beach by the pier, and chocolate-dipped frozen bananas are a Balboa Island tradition. Tacos and fresh fish fill the casual restaurants along the water. The climate is Mediterranean, with a marine haze known as May Gray and June Gloom, warm sunny summers and mild winters.
