Nashville stands on the Cumberland River in middle Tennessee and is the home of country music. The Ryman Auditorium, a brick hall built as a gospel tabernacle and nicknamed the Mother Church of Country Music, hosted the Grand Ole Opry radio show for decades, and the Opry now plays on the outskirts. The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum tells the story of the genre, and honky-tonks on Lower Broadway have live bands.

RCA Studio B and Music Row are the working heart of the recording trade. Centennial Park holds a full-size replica of the Parthenon, built in 1897, a reminder of Nashville's old nickname, the Athens of the South. The Tennessee State Capitol, a Greek Revival building, stands on a hill. The Hermitage, Andrew Jackson's plantation home, and the historic town of Franklin, with its Civil War battlefield, are a short drive away.

Hot chicken, fried chicken coated in cayenne paste and served on white bread with pickles, was born in Nashville. Meat-and-three plates, barbecue, biscuits and banana pudding fill the city's diners, with Tennessee whiskey to follow.
