Naples lies on Florida's Gulf coast, a city of wide white beaches, canals, golf courses and palm-lined avenues. Its pier, rebuilt several times since the 19th century, stretches out over the water, and Third Street South and Fifth Avenue South are lined with shops, galleries and restaurants in Spanish-style and tropical buildings. Tin City, a waterfront group of shops, sits beside the river.
The Naples Botanical Garden and the zoo at Caribbean Gardens are popular, and Clam Pass Park has a boardwalk through mangroves to the beach. To the south, Marco Island is the largest of the Ten Thousand Islands, and Everglades City, on the western edge of the Everglades, is about fifty kilometres away, with boat trips among mangrove islands. Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary has a long boardwalk through an old cypress forest.
Stone crab claws, in season from October to May, grouper and Gulf shrimp are local favourites, along with key lime pie. Winter, from December to April, is the dry season and the busiest.
