Nagoya is one of Japan's biggest cities, set on a broad plain at the head of Ise Bay and long a centre of the country's car and machinery industries. Its castle, built by the Tokugawa in the early 1600s, is topped by a pair of golden shachihoko, mythical fish with tigers' heads, and the keep was rebuilt after the war with a restored palace beside it. Atsuta Shrine, among the most venerated in Japan, houses a sacred sword.
The Tokugawa Art Museum holds a twelfth-century scroll of The Tale of Genji and samurai armour, and Osu Kannon temple opens onto covered shopping arcades. Nagoya's TV tower stands in the Sakae district, and the port has a large aquarium. Inuyama Castle, one of the oldest original keeps in Japan, and the cormorant fishing at Gifu are within an hour, as are the pottery town of Tokoname and the Ise Grand Shrine less than two hours away.
Nagoya-meshi, the city's own cooking, includes miso katsu, pork cutlet in a dark soybean-paste sauce, hitsumabushi, grilled eel on rice served three ways, and tebasaki, peppery fried chicken wings. Cafés serve a morning set of coffee with toast and ogura red-bean paste. Cherry blossom comes to the castle grounds in early April.
