The Mornington Peninsula is a hook of land with a sheltered bay shore on one side and a wild ocean shore facing Bass Strait on the other. Seaside towns line the bay, among them Mornington, Sorrento and Portsea, where limestone buildings and rows of painted bathing boxes face the water. Point Nepean at the tip holds old forts and a former quarantine station within the national park.
On the ocean side the cliffs at Cape Schanck carry a lighthouse from 1859, with boardwalks leading down to rock platforms and surf beaches. Inland, the hills around Red Hill and Arthurs Seat give views across the bay, and geothermal bathing pools lie near Rye. A ferry crosses the bay entrance from Sorrento to Queenscliff, and Phillip Island lies across Western Port to the east.
Cool-climate pinot noir and chardonnay are poured at cellar doors in the hills, alongside cider, strawberries and olive oil from local farms, and the bay towns serve fish and chips on the foreshore. Melburnians fill the bay beaches in summer, while the autumn harvest and mild days are quieter and just as good.
