Experience the best of Modena

Modena is an Emilian city of cathedral and tower, balsamic vinegar, tortellini and fast cars, in the flat country between Bologna and Parma.

Modena's centre is a World Heritage Site: the Romanesque cathedral, carved with scenes by the sculptor Wiligelmo, the Ghirlandina tower beside it and the Piazza Grande together form one of Italy's finest medieval ensembles. Arcaded streets lead to the Ducal Palace, built for the Este family when they moved their court from Ferrara in the late sixteenth century, and the Estense Gallery holds their art collection.

Modena is the heartland of fast cars: the Enzo Ferrari Museum stands in the city, Ferrari's factory and museum are at Maranello a short drive south, and the Lamborghini factory lies near Bologna. The tenor Luciano Pavarotti was born in Modena, and its opera house carries his name. Bologna, Parma and Ferrara are all within an hour.

Traditional balsamic vinegar, aged for years in small wooden barrels, is made in the countryside around town, and Modena sets it beside Parmigiano-Reggiano, tortellini in broth and zampone, a stuffed pig's trotter. Lambrusco, a sparkling red, is the local wine, and the Albinelli market, a covered hall, sells all of it. Winters are foggy and cold, and spring and autumn are the best seasons.
