Moab sits in a valley of red sandstone cliffs beside the Colorado River in south-east Utah, with the snowy La Sal Mountains rising to the east. It began as a farming settlement in the 1870s, a uranium boom in the 1950s brought a rush of prospectors, and today it is a base for outdoor travel. Arches National Park lies just north, with more than two thousand natural stone arches, including Delicate Arch.

Canyonlands National Park spreads across the plateau to the west and south, with the Island in the Sky mesa overlooking branching canyons, and Dead Horse Point State Park looks down on a tight bend of the Colorado River. The Fisher Towers are red sandstone spires, Corona Arch can be reached by a short hike, and the Slickrock Bike Trail is famous among mountain bikers. Rafting, canyoneering and four-wheel-drive trails fill out the area.

Moab's restaurants serve big burgers, steaks and Dutch-oven cooking, with local brewery beers and strong coffee. Summer heat often tops 38 degrees Celsius, which is why spring and autumn are the favoured seasons.
