Experience the best of Memphis

Memphis is a Mississippi River city in Tennessee, home of the blues and Elvis, with Beale Street, Sun Studio, Graceland and slow-smoked barbecue.

Memphis stands on a bluff above the Mississippi River in south-west Tennessee, and its streets are a birthplace of the blues, soul and rock and roll. Beale Street, lined with neon-lit blues clubs, is the best known of its music strips. Sun Studio, a small recording room, is where Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash and Jerry Lee Lewis made early records, and Graceland, the mansion where Elvis lived, is south of the centre.

The Stax Museum of American Soul Music stands on the site of the old Stax studio, and the National Civil Rights Museum is built around the Lorraine Motel, where Martin Luther King Jr was killed in 1968. The Peabody Hotel is known for the ducks that march through its lobby. A stainless-steel pyramid, once an arena, stands on the riverfront, and Mud Island River Park has a scale model of the lower Mississippi.

Barbecue is the city's pride: pork ribs rubbed with dry spices, pulled pork sandwiches topped with coleslaw, and even barbecue spaghetti. Fried catfish and hot tamales are also regional favourites. Summers are hot and sticky, and spring and autumn are milder.
