Experience the best of Louisville

Louisville is Kentucky's largest city, on the Ohio River, famed for the Kentucky Derby, a giant baseball bat and a trail of bourbon distilleries.

Louisville stands on the Ohio River, on the border with Indiana, and was named in 1780 after King Louis XVI of France. Churchill Downs, home of the Kentucky Derby since 1875, has twin spires on its grandstand and a museum telling the story of the race. Whiskey Row, a street of old cast-iron buildings downtown, now holds bourbon bars and distillery tours, and the Muhammad Ali Center honours the boxer who was born in the city.

A giant baseball bat leans against the museum and factory where bats are made, and the Big Four Bridge, a former railway bridge, is now a pedestrian path across the river. The city's park system was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, and the Mega Cavern is a limestone mine with underground trails. Bardstown and the distilleries of the Bourbon Trail lie to the south-east, and Mammoth Cave National Park, the longest known cave system in the world, is to the south.

The Hot Brown, an open turkey sandwich with bacon and cheese sauce created at a downtown hotel in the 1920s, is the city's dish, with burgoo, a thick stew, and bourbon balls beside it. Spring and autumn are the best seasons and summers are hot and humid, but bourbon and mint juleps flow whenever the Derby comes round.
