Long Island runs east from New York City for about 190 kilometres, a long island of beaches and bays between the Atlantic Ocean and Long Island Sound, split at its eastern end into the North Fork and South Fork. Brooklyn and Queens lie at its western end, while Nassau and Suffolk counties make up the rest, a mix of suburbs, villages and farmland. Jones Beach, a state park with a long strip of ocean sand and an Art Deco bathhouse, is one of its busiest places.
Fire Island, a narrow barrier island reached by ferry, has a lighthouse and car-free villages, and Montauk Point, at the eastern tip, has a lighthouse commissioned in 1792 under George Washington. The Hamptons are a chain of seaside villages with beaches, gardens and art galleries. On the North Shore, Gold Coast mansions such as Old Westbury Gardens, and Sagamore Hill, the home of President Theodore Roosevelt at Oyster Bay, recall the Gilded Age.
The North Fork is a wine country of vineyards and farm stands, and the island is known for Long Island duck, Blue Point oysters, clams, sweet corn and potatoes. Bagels and pizza are local passions, and roadside stands sell peaches in summer and pumpkins in autumn. Summer is the beach season, autumn brings harvest festivals, and winters are cold but quiet.
