Long Beach sits on San Pedro Bay about thirty kilometres south of downtown Los Angeles, a port city with a long beachfront, a downtown waterfront and a busy arts scene. The Queen Mary, an ocean liner of the 1930s, is moored permanently in the harbour, and the Aquarium of the Pacific, beside Rainbow Harbor, is home to sea otters, sharks and jellyfish. Pine Avenue downtown has shops and restaurants.
Belmont Shore, a seaside neighbourhood with a main street of cafés, and Naples Island, a small island of canals where gondolas glide, are favourite places to stroll. The Museum of Latin American Art and the Long Beach Museum of Art stand near the coast, and Rancho Los Cerritos and Rancho Los Alamitos preserve adobe ranch houses. Catalina Island is reached by boat from the harbour, and Disneyland, Huntington Beach and Palos Verdes are all within an easy drive.
Long Beach has a large Cambodian community, and Cambodia Town along Anaheim Street serves noodle soups and grilled fish beside Mexican taquerias. Formula racing has filled the downtown streets each spring since 1975. The Mediterranean climate means mild winters and dry summers, often with a grey morning layer of sea cloud.
