Experience the best of Lecce

Lecce is a Baroque city in Italy's heel, built in honey-coloured limestone and carved with flowers, animals and saints on every façade.

Lecce's soft local limestone could be carved like wood, and the architects of the seventeenth century used it to cover churches and palaces in garlands, cherubs, animals and plants, a style called Leccese Baroque. The Basilica of Santa Croce has the richest façade, and the Piazza del Duomo is a closed square with a campanile. A Roman amphitheatre lies half uncovered in Piazza Sant'Oronzo, and the city is sometimes called the Florence of the South.

Craftsmen in Lecce still make papier-mâché figures, a local tradition, and the Castle of Charles V stands at the edge of the old centre. The Salento peninsula surrounds the city: the Adriatic coast has Otranto, with a cathedral floor in mosaic, and Torre dell'Orso beach, while the Ionian side has Gallipoli and Porto Cesareo. Fortified farmhouses, olive groves and stone walls fill the flat red countryside.

A pasticciotto, a shortcrust pastry filled with custard, is the breakfast of Lecce, taken with caffè leccese, espresso over ice and almond milk. Friselle and rustico, a puff-pastry parcel of tomato and mozzarella, are on every counter, orecchiette fill the menus, and the red wines of Negroamaro and Primitivo come from nearby vineyards.
