Experience the best of Launceston

Launceston is northern Tasmania's main city, set at the head of the Tamar River with Georgian streets and a wild gorge close to the centre.

Read moreShow less

Launceston lies at the head of the Tamar River, where the North Esk and South Esk meet, and is Tasmania's second city. Georgian and Victorian buildings line its streets, and Cataract Gorge, a steep ravine of the South Esk, opens within walking distance of the centre, with a suspension bridge, bush tracks and a chairlift. City Park holds a Japanese macaque enclosure and a conservatory.

The Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery has two sites in the city. The Tamar Valley, which runs north towards Bass Strait, is a cool-climate wine region known for pinot noir and sparkling wines, with orchards and small river towns. Evandale, a village of Georgian buildings, lies south of the city, and Ben Lomond National Park rises to the east.

Local produce is a point of pride, from berries and cheese to smoked trout and salmon, and beer has been brewed in the city since the nineteenth century. Mornings can be cold even in summer, gardens look best in spring, and winter is cool with frosts and fog on the river.
