Lamezia Terme is a modern town formed in 1968 from several older centres on the Calabrian plain, close to the narrowest part of the Italian peninsula. Its airport is the main gateway to the region, and the town is a practical base for exploring both coasts.

The Sila, a high plateau of pine and chestnut woods, rises to the north-east and suits walking and winter sports. The sea is close by: Pizzo, on the Tyrrhenian shore, is known for its tartufo ice cream and for the castle where Joachim Murat was shot in 1815, and Tropea, on a cliff above the water, is famous for its red onions and beaches.

Calabrian cooking is spicy. 'Nduja, a soft, fiery pork spread from Spilinga, and chilli appear in many dishes, and the local cheeses and olive oil are good. Summers are hot and dry, and the sea is warm from June to September. Walking and visiting hill towns are best in spring and autumn.
