Tropea perches on a sandstone cliff above the Tyrrhenian Sea, on the stretch of Calabrian coast known as the Costa degli Dei, the Coast of the Gods. Its old town of narrow lanes, balconied palaces and a Norman cathedral leads to the cliff edge, where the church of Santa Maria dell'Isola stands on a rocky headland that is joined to the shore.

Beaches of pale sand lie directly below the town, and the Capo Vaticano headland, a short drive south, has coves, a lighthouse and wide views. On clear days the volcano of Stromboli, in the Aeolian Islands, shows on the horizon, and boats run to the islands from nearby ports. Pizzo, up the coast, is known for its tartufo ice cream and for the castle where Joachim Murat, brother-in-law of Napoleon, was executed.

Tropea's red onions, sweet enough to eat raw and protected by a European quality label, are made into salads, jam and even ice cream. Spring and early autumn are the pleasant shoulders of a warm, sunny year. Spicy 'nduja, a spreadable pork salami, comes from nearby Spilinga, and fileja, hand-rolled pasta, is served with tomato and hot pepper sauces.
