Lake Tahoe is a deep alpine lake on the California-Nevada border, ringed by Sierra Nevada peaks, with beaches, ski resorts and pine forest.

Lake Tahoe lies high in the Sierra Nevada, straddling the California-Nevada line at about 1,900 metres. It is about thirty-five kilometres long and more than 500 metres deep, among the deepest lakes in North America, and its water is exceptionally clear and blue. Emerald Bay, on the south-west shore, has a tiny island and Vikingsholm, a Scandinavian-style mansion. Sand Harbor, on the Nevada side, has boulders and sandy beaches.

South Lake Tahoe borders the casinos of Stateline, Tahoe City and Incline Village are lakeside towns, and Truckee is an old railway town to the north. The valley near Tahoe City held the 1960 Winter Olympics, and the ski resorts around the lake draw skiers each winter. Donner Lake lies near Truckee, and the long Tahoe Rim Trail circles the basin. Reno lies to the north-east.

Lake trout and other Sierra fish appear on local menus, along with farm-to-table dishes and craft beer, and skiers warm up with hot chocolate. In October the aspens turn gold on the slopes.
