La Spezia lies at the head of a deep gulf on the Ligurian coast, ringed by hills of olive groves and sheltered by a long breakwater. It is an important naval base as well as a commercial port, and a seafront promenade, Passeggiata Morin, runs beside the harbour. The Amedeo Lia Museum holds paintings and medieval works, and the Castello di San Giorgio on a hill above keeps finds from the area.
Trains run from La Spezia Centrale to the five villages of the Cinque Terre, painted houses stacked on cliffs above the sea and linked by coastal footpaths and vineyard terraces, a World Heritage site. On the gulf, Portovenere has tall coloured houses and the black-and-white church of San Pietro on a rock, with the islands of Palmaria and Tino offshore, while Lerici, a harbour town with a castle, lies on the east side.
Trofie pasta with pesto, focaccia, farinata, a chickpea flatbread, and local anchovies set the style, and stuffed mussels, farmed in the gulf, are a dish of the city. The villages of the Cinque Terre make a sweet white wine, Sciacchetrà, from dried grapes. The villages are at their most crowded in summer, and the months either side are gentler.
