La Jolla is a coastal district of San Diego, set on a headland of cliffs, coves and sea caves facing the Pacific. The village centre, around Prospect Street and Girard Avenue, has art galleries, boutiques and cafés, and the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego has a gallery on the cliff top. La Jolla Cove, a small sheltered beach, lies in a protected marine area where snorkellers swim among bright orange garibaldi fish and kayakers paddle past the sea caves.

Sea lions and harbour seals bask on the rocks and beaches near the Cove and the Children's Pool, and pelicans and cormorants perch on the cliffs. The Birch Aquarium at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, on a hill above the sea, shows Pacific marine life. To the north, Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve protects the rare Torrey pine on sandstone bluffs with trails down to a beach, and hang gliders launch from the gliderport nearby.

Fish tacos and fresh seafood are served at cliff-top restaurants, and California brunch cafés fill the village streets. The climate is mild all year, with grey mornings in May and June, and grey whales pass offshore on their migration from December to March.
