Experience the best of Key West

Key West is the southernmost city in the continental United States, a small Florida Keys island of wooden conch houses, coral reefs and sunset crowds.

Key West lies at the end of the Overseas Highway, the road that hops from island to island for about 180 kilometres from the mainland, and is about 150 kilometres from Cuba. The old town is a grid of narrow streets lined with wooden conch houses trimmed with white fretwork and shaded by palms. Free-roaming chickens wander the pavements.

Ernest Hemingway's house, with its descendants of six-toed cats, and the Little White House, used by President Truman, stand in the old town, and the lighthouse offers views. At Mallory Square, crowds gather each evening to watch the sunset, and the painted buoy at the Southernmost Point is a favourite photograph. Offshore, the only living coral barrier reef in the continental United States is a draw for snorkellers, and Dry Tortugas National Park, with its brick fort, lies about 110 kilometres west.

Key lime pie, made with the tart local limes, is the sweet to know, with conch fritters, fresh snapper and Key West pink shrimp. Cuban sandwiches and strong coffee reflect nearby Cuba and the city's long Cuban community. The climate is tropical, and even winter is warm.
